Two Maya women walk several sheep along a rural road under a cloudy sky, with lush greenery.

The Maya Hinterland is an area between Puerto Morelos and Leona Vicario in Quintana Roo, Mexico.

It is comprised of unspoiled jungle along the Ruta de los Cenotes and small Maya communities.

With the help of the Maya Hinterland Fund we support these indigenous communities and the creation of an educational Sanctuary within our Nature Reserve.

Maya children examine stuffed animals and a soccer ball, during a distribution event.

Even before the Covid crisis these little villages struggled with supporting their families and education for their children.

Trip to Chichen Itza

The expansive grounds of Chichén Itzá, with the iconic Pyramid of Kukulcán prominently in view.

See how Maya children experience for the first time what their ancestors built. Many members of the Maya community know very little about the history of their ancestors nor have seen it first hand. With the help of sponsors and the Maya Hinterland Fund we organized a community trip to Chichen Itza.

Eagle Release

Experience the feeling when Mother Nature gets back one of her own. This eagle was kept in a small cage since it was a chick. When it arrived at the vet Dr. Dulce in Puerto Morelos she had to pry open the cage because the eagle had grown too big for the little hatch. She then nursed it back to life and Adalberto the eagle trainer from Leona Vicario taught it to fly and hunt again.

Distributing Donations

Be a guest in one of the homes of the community in the Maya Hinterland near Puerto Morelos and see for yourself the joy and big eyes of the children. When we receive donations such a clothes and toys we always give it to the leaders of the various Maya communities. They then arrange for an event and distribute these donations amongst the members who have the greatest need. natural cenote tours and visits with maya families maya jungle excursions and melipona honey
