We came out of the jungle in the Maya Hinterland to watch the sunrise on the beach of Puerto Morelos. The day was July 25th. 2022. This marked the end of the Maya year and this day is called Day out of time.  As good luck had it we saw this sea turtle digging a nest to lay her eggs and then return to the ocean.  A unforgettable experience.

Friends invited us to stay at the beach in Puerto Morelos for the weekend. Bruno has never experienced the ocean. He only knows the fresh water of the cenotes in the jungle along the Ruta de los Cenotes and the Maya Hinterland. 

Under the umbrella of the Maya Hinterland Project are several programs along the Ruta de los Cenotes, in Puerto Morelos and Leona Vicario. All programs are aimed at the betterment of the Maya communities in the Riviera Maya and the Yucatan Peninsula.

The purpose of the Maya Theater is to introduce Maya children to their ancestry, language and history before it is lost. This video is about our first event at the Maya Theater at the Maya Museum Tuukul Taam in Leona Vicario, near Puerto Morelos, Mexico

With the help of the Maya Hinterland Fund we could build a free library for the children. I started it off today with the delivery of the last non-jungle possessions I had. National Geographic Magazines and coffee table books I collected over decades from around the world.

Even a simple but rewarding lifestyle is not without mundane tasks. Watch what it takes to sustain this simple jungle lifestyle. 

These tasks become a little bit elaborate once you life in the jungle along the Ruta de los Cenotes near Puerto Morelos.

Watch Bruno being goofy in the morning and listen to the sounds of nature. You will hear monkeys, parrots, toucans, toh and a myriad of birds greeting the new day. Listen carefully, you will also hear the bird Toh which according to Maya mythology is the bird of humility.

Watch and more importantly listen while making a monkey salad in the jungle. :) In this video I was just preparing my evening salad when nearby spider monkeys started to raise havoc.  The jungle along the Ruta de los Cenotes near Puerto Morelos is never quiet.

We were out deep in the nature reserve along the Ruta de los Cenotes in the Maya Hinterland near Puerto Morelos.   Just having a bit fun living off grid and enjoying jungle life.

Watch a downpour in the jungle along the Ruta de los Cenotes, near Puerto Morelos with a glorious finish.  When it rains in the jungle it seldom just drizzles. The Maya community in the Maya Hinterland had its good share of hurricanes and storms this year.

In this video I take you along on a trip into the jungle reserve and you will also see my hut.  . During clean up we put the wood that can be used for campfire to the side of the road.  We also encouraged the Maya community to come into the reserve to collect the firewood they need.

Watch spider monkeys in the wild throughout our nature reserve. Living off grid in the jungle and close with my monkey neighbors is always a source of entertainment.  Spider monkeys are the only species of monkeys we have in these parts of the jungle along the Ruta de los Cenotes between Puerto Morelos and Leona Vicario.

I often get asked to make a video with the sound of the jungle. And here it is. In these 30 minutes you will hear the jungle sounds and how they change throughout the evening, night and morning. From the monkeys getting ready to sleep to the early birds in the morning and the night creatures in between. 

Doña Martina is a traditional Maya beekeeper. Have a a close up look at these sacred bees of the Maya.

The stingless Melipona bees are still considered sacred to the Maya and so is the honey these bees produce.

The Maya name for the Melipona bee is Xunan Kab. This means the noble or the royal Lady.

Puerto Morelos is a small town with a seaport between Cancun and Playa del Carmen. It is located on the east coast of the Mexican state of Quintana Roo on the Yucatan Peninsula. You will also see a series of photographs I produced when I was still living in town and Corona was just a beer.
