We came out of the jungle in the Maya Hinterland to watch the sunrise on the beach of Puerto Morelos. The day was July 25th. 2022. This marked the end of the Maya year and this day is called Day out of time. As good luck had it we saw this sea turtle digging a nest to lay her eggs and then return to the ocean. A unforgettable experience.

Friends invited us to stay at the beach in Puerto Morelos for the weekend. Bruno has never experienced the ocean. He only knows the fresh water of the cenotes in the jungle along the Ruta de los Cenotes and the Maya Hinterland.
Under the umbrella of the Maya Hinterland Project are several programs along the Ruta de los Cenotes, in Puerto Morelos and Leona Vicario. All programs are aimed at the betterment of the Maya communities in the Riviera Maya and the Yucatan Peninsula.

With the help of the Maya Hinterland Fund we could build a free library for the children. I started it off today with the delivery of the last non-jungle possessions I had. National Geographic Magazines and coffee table books I collected over decades from around the world.

In this video I take you along on a trip into the jungle reserve and you will also see my hut. . During clean up we put the wood that can be used for campfire to the side of the road. We also encouraged the Maya community to come into the reserve to collect the firewood they need.

Spider monkeys are the only species of monkeys we have in these parts of the jungle along the Ruta de los Cenotes between Puerto Morelos and Leona Vicario.

The stingless Melipona bees are still considered sacred to the Maya and so is the honey these bees produce.
The Maya name for the Melipona bee is Xunan Kab. This means the noble or the royal Lady.
Puerto Morelos is a small town with a seaport between Cancun and Playa del Carmen. It is located on the east coast of the Mexican state of Quintana Roo on the Yucatan Peninsula. You will also see a series of photographs I produced when I was still living in town and Corona was just a beer.
